THANK YOU for the sponsorship of the New Mexico Community Foundation and thegenerosity of the Ford Foundation, we now can offer WHAT'S ART CONVENTION SCHOLARSHIPS until we exhaust funds for Scholarships are given at the following rate: 50% of the $30 community artists or art-buyers and collectors (i.e. $15); and 50% of the $20 for student artists (i.e. $10). 2009 2nd Annual WHAT'S ART? Convention and Street Festival of Southern New Mexico. Exploring Our Creative & Green Economy Events will take place Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd, 2009 at Alma d'arte (Court Youth Center), Las Cruces, NM. $30 includes Friday artful cuisine Receptiont 6:30 to 9:00 PM by Chef Maurice Zeck (& speaker John Villani, author of 100 Best Small Art Towns in America (We wanted to be listed in his next edition). Santa, plus choice of Saturday workshops 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, for Advocates, Consumers, and Producers/Creators of 'Creative Economy' of Southern New Mexico (some examples: Goal Setting for Small Artists/Arts Organizations - Steven Chavira - Comcast; Networking for Sales in arts Businesses - George Pintar of SCORE/SYNERGY; What's Art in the Schools? - Irene Oliver-Lewis; and dozen other workshops).

1:30-3:30 --- Invited audience exploring Future of Creative Economy of Southern New Mexico and its Arts & Culture Industry -- Speaker is Sabrina Pratt , Director of Santa Fe Arts Commission, author of Creative Tourism, A Global Conversation (book) by Rebecca Wurzburger (Editor), Tom Aageson (Editor), Alex Pattakos (Editor), Sabrina Pratt (Editor). Sabrina has also studied what makes for a great and prosperous Arts Scene in a Creative Economy.

David Boje will facilitate Talking Stick conversations to SHAPE THE FUTUE. The overall question (from the stage): What is an Art-full community? Who should be included/counted? How does it contribute to the overall sense of community – socially, economically, in relationship to the state?

Our specific ASKS of Policy Makers:

  1. What are the costs and benefits of Las Cruces achieving Arts & Cultural District Status with the State?
  2. How can a $15K study (based on New England States Method) be financed to assess Southern New Mexico women arts and culture workers?
  3. What are some of the ways our area can have its arts-economy voice heard in the State Capital – Santa Fe?

John Villani is the author of 100 Best Small Art Towns in America and other books. His 2005 edition mentions Mesilla & Las Cruces, and we want that coverage in his next book. Villani is a fantastic human being and incredibly knowledgeable about how communities position themselves as centers of arts, creativity and livability. Also, he will participate in the panel for Friday afternoon and bring tools and tips for local communities to achieve their creative community building goals. Convention is seeking artists who wish to sell their art October 2 & 3 at Alma d’arte Charter High School (402 Court St.) where the WHAT'S ART Convention will take place. Guidelines can be obtained at Alma H.S. or at talkingstick.info. E-mail iwhite@zianet.com or call 647-3546 for more information. All media are accepted. There is no fee to enter.
