2009 2nd Annual WHAT'S ART? Convention of Southern New Mexico. Exploring Our Creative & Green Economy Events will take place Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd, 2009 at Alma d'arte (Court Youth Center) and Pioneer Women's Park, Las Cruces, NM. $60 includes Friday artful cuisine banquet 7:30 to 9:30 PM by Chef Maurice Zeck (& speaker Santa Fe Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Wurzburger), plus choice of Saturday workshops 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, for Advocates, Consumers, and Producers/Creators of 'Creative Economy' of Southern New Mexico (some examples: Goal Setting for Small Artists/Arts Organizations - Steven Chavira - Comcast; Networking for Sales in arts Businesses - George Pintar of SCORE/SYNERGY; What's Art in the Schools? - Irene Oliver-Lewis; Creating Solidarity Within the Creative Community - Julie Steinkopf Rice NMSU, and dozen other workshops).

GOOD NEWS! ! John Villani has agreed to speak at our convention. John is the author of 100 Best Small Art Towns in America and other books. A fantastic human being and incredibly knowledgeable about how communities position themselves as centers of arts, creativity and livability. Also, he will participate in the panel for Friday afternoon and bring tools and tips for local communities to achieve their creative community building goals.

Plus there are FREE Saturday events for the public in Green Arts happenings (facilitated by artist Virginia Maria Romero) that will take place at Pioneer Women's Park from Noon to 4:30 PM, including Mandala (sand painting led by Sudeshna Sengupta, MFA) and mural creating (led by a team of artists) in support of Environmental (Green) Arts, A Children's Theatre performances, Talking Stick Circles, Hip Hop music for all ages (produced by Asher Underwood), and Storytelling Tours of historic Alameda, Mesquite, and Mesilla by expert historians (e.g. Storyteller Precilliana Sandova). Vendors are available if you want lunch in the Park.

Keep in mind arts and culture is an industry that generates $166.2 billion in arts organizations' spending and audience-spending, and pays almost $30 billion in revenues to all levels of government, plus local audiences pay $27.79 in other purchases, and travelers about $40 more than ticket price in hotel, meals, and retail purchases. WHAT'S ART Convention is co-supported by NMSU, Las Cruces, Mesilla, Downtown Partnership US Senator Bingaman, State Senator Fishmann, SYNERGY, Greater Chamber of Commerce, and arts organizations (Alma d'arte Charter School, A Children's Theatre, Mikey's Place, Mesilla Museum Foundation, Watercolor Society, ArtForms, & City of Artist Promotional Association).

"WHAT'S ART?" 2nd annual Convention of Southern New Mexico: Exploring Our Creative & Green Economy Print latest brochure pdf TSI incubates ideas at each annual Arts Convention that you the participants bring forth, form taskforces of artists and students to incubate them further, to care and nurture them, and then invite arts organizations in our community to adopt them as their very own, and to raise them into success. We facilitate workshops that help the business of art.

WHEN: Dates to Jot Down

A WHAT'S ART CONVENTION Fund Raiser is going to be August 8th (Saturday), 6;30-9:00 PM at 100 West Cafe (Gerald Thomas Hall) located on Knox Avenue off University (enter SW corner of building), attendants will direct people where to park. $50 per person, with capacity for 50 people. We want to raise money for six scholarships to the convention for artists and students, and money to pay for convention costs (food, park, arts materials).

4:30-5:30 Park clean up, with recycling provided by Art Lucero, NMSU Recycling (volunteeres appreciated)

SATURDAY PIONEER WOMEN'S PARK (Events free to the Public, for all ages; Green Arts happenings (facilitated by artist Virginia Maria Romero) that will take place at Pioneer Women's Park from Noon to 4:30 PM - See Map

11:00-12:00 -- Vendors setup their own tables & displays for sales of food or art/crafts items ($80 fee); Supporting Arts and Economic Organizations set up tables & displays without sales (Free to What's Art Support Organizations). Please use only recyclable Plastic bottles (#1),

12:00-2:00 Lunch in the park (bring your own or purchase from vendors); Entertainment - A Children's Theatre performances in the Park

4:30-5:30 Green event - recylcing the materials, tidying up, restoring Pioneer Park the way we found it. Thank you NMSU Aggie Recyling
