About the Heterogram Test: The "Heterogram" is a pictorial test of your visual aesthetic tastes. It was developed by maruyama (1981, 1999) to measure the four mindscape types. It is based upon the rationale that "aesthetic designs, architecture and landscape architecture are expressions of mindscape types" (Maruyama, 2002: 159). Some people prefer symmetry (e.g. 'Dutch tulip gardens'); others like nonredundant complexity in their art (e.g. Picasso).

 

Instructions: You will be presented with 42 designs.Print out a copy of this test. You will need to mail it to the address given below to obtain the results. Please rate each on the seven-point scales between the three pairs of adjectives: (ugly/beautiful; interesting/boring & simple/complex). Finally indicate whether each design has any meaning, and if so, write down, if it is a "positive" or a "negative" meaning for your. Rate the strength of the meaning on the five-point scale.
