Petition to Put Democracy Now on KRWG

click for update report

Current Goal: We request that a 'Community Advisory Board" be formed for KRWG community programming outreach. krwgfm@nmsu.edu

Donate $$$ to KRWG for the purpose of putting Democracy Now on the air. Thus far (March 7 2003) PeaceAware has raised $370 for this purpose (Send Letter Now). Unfortunately PeaceAware discovered that only one pledge card used the words "pledge contingent upon adding Democracy Now to KRWG"; all cards that said "put Democracy Now on the air" those monies are not interpreted as CONTINGENT and were added and spent in the general fund, without keeping any tally of the total amount pledged. In short, next time you make a PLEDGE to KRWG, indicate "This money is given contingent only on the condition that Democracy Now is actually added to the KRWG program schedule; any other use of this pledge is PROHIBITED" If you have any questions or comments, please call KRWG at (505) 646-4525 or contact us at krwgfm@nmsu.edu Also please see http://www.peaceaware.com/documents/democracy_now_meet_KRWG.htm for updates on our Campaign for KRWG-FM to host Democracy Now and create a Community Advisory Board.

Please Take This Listener COMPARISON TEST 1. Listen to KRWG then  2. Listen Mon to Fri to Democracy Now First Half Hour then to 2nd Half

Please visit the KRUX page of PeaceAware to thank the Student Station for Putting Democracy Now on the air, and to Pledge your Dollar $$$ support to keep it on the air in Las Cruces.

Status Report

Nov 24 2003, several faculty at NMSU favoring Democracy Now met with five faculty of KRWG-fm and the Dean of College of Arts and Sciences and asked that a Community Advisory Board be formed to give input to programming and review pleadge contributions for the show. Those talks are on going. We hope for the best. The establishment of an advisory committee is a proposal worthy of consideration. We will strive to foster atmosphere that conducive to building dialog, trust and collaboration.

You can help. Send Pledge Letter Now KRWG also has an open door policy. Please schedule a visit with someone at KRWG (please be very polite):

Feb 6 - 2003 PeaceAware presented a petition of over one hundred signatures recommending KRWG-fm put Democracy Now on the air. The answer was "no."

There has been some important success. In the Fall of 2003 NMSU students led a successful campaign to put Democracy Now on KRUX, campus radio. 91.5 FMMon - Fri 4-5 PM However, the delivery radius is only a couple of miles and many other people in Southern New Mexico would like to have their public access to the show. Give your feedback@krux.fm. Also, please visit the KRUX page of PeaceAware to thank these people and see the status of this campaign. We need you to Contact KRWG and let them know how much you like and appreciate Democracy Now being aired in Las Cruces.

Democracy Now makes a difference in our community; it adds a voice that is sorely needed. It is brain food. We want it continued... Adding it to KRWG will increace the radius of availablility of the show throughout Dona Ana County.

In our Feb 6th 2003 petition drive (230 signors in Las Cruces & 166 in Silver City), letter writing campaigns, and meetings with KRWG (Station manager Colin Grotatzky, eg. Feb 6 2003 where first 122 petition list was presented), it has been pointed out to us by email and Feb 6 2003 and Nov 24 2003 meetings that, according to Professor Grotatzky putting Democracy Now on the air in Las Cruces would lessen fund raising efforts for the station. Professor Grotatzky has an open door policy and welcomes your feedback.

Feb 6 - 2003 - We the undersigned request that Mr. Ford Ballard and Station Manger Colin Gromatzky, of KRWG put Democracy Now program into the program schedule. KRWG has a responsibility to cover the peace movement activities in the United States. This is especially critical given the lack of coverage by the ultra conservative Las Cruces print and TV media in Southern New Mexico. To add your name to this list - send email to dboje@nmsu.edu  (indicate if you are KRWG listener or subscriber).

We at PeaceAware think the view that KRWG lowers fundraising is not empirically accurate. For example, several delegates of PeaceAware attended University of Arizona's public access fund raiser last Sunday (Oct 12th 2003). They had Amy Goodman as their featured fund-raising speaker. There was a full house of over 3,000 attending and it was amazing. It was pointed out by the Democracy Now program is the top fund raising show (more than 'All Things Considered') according to listener surveys at KXCI, KUNM, KUSP, WJFF, & KZYX (according to Jeremy Seahill, DN producer). See http://accesstucson.org/news/amygoodman/

"In the four years that KZYX has been airing Democracy Now!, it has become an essential part of our news and information programming, providing a complement and balance to the perspectives heard on NPR. Since day one, Democracy Now! has consistently outperformed both Morning Edition and All Things Considered, both during fund drives and in listener loyalty. For many listeners, it is the high point of our broadcast day. We highly recommend adding Democracy Now! to any station looking to expand the reach and scope of their news programming."
Mary Aigner, Program Director, KZYX, Mendocino, CA (source).

In addition, many of the 230 petition signors pledged or gave money (in excess of $1,000) to NMSU fundraising for KRWG with the explicit request that this money be designated for Democracy Now; as far as we can determine, there has been no accounting for pledges made for this explicit purpose. And in Silver City, we are informed that sponsors of KRWG are withholding donations until the show is aired on KRWG. it was reported that in the "Fall Festival 2003" pledge drive report, only one contributior made their pledge "contingent upon putting Democracy Now in the KRWG program schedule." And the "On-Air Comments" of the "Fall Festival 2003" pleadge drive only showed six out of 1,000 comments requesting Democracy Now (abbreviated "DN"):

  1. Get DN
  2. Request for DN
  3. Wants DN!!
  4. Would like to see DN on the radio
  5. I love KRWG! it's the only radio station I listen to! Please get DN!
  6. DN, please

Those of us at PeaceAware that listened to the "On-Air Comments" and worked as volunteers taking calls heard many more comments than 6. We therefore request that you immediately contact KRWG and PeaceAware to record your comment, so that these can be compared with the list of comments submitted as the official "Fall Festival 2003 ON-AIR COMMENTS" Send to krwgfm@nmsu.edu and to Peace@PeaceAware.com Please be courteous and respectful, since irrate comments are counted as negative, and will hurt this campaign.

The second challenge raised is that the station manger would need to put a conservative show (which we imagine to be a Rush Limbaugh show) on the air to counter the liberal media activism of Amy Goodman. This was asserted in the Feb 6 2003 and the Nov 24th meetings with KRWG. This is not a valid reason since Democracy Now plays on 200 stations and none have invoked such a policy. See List of awards the show has received.

For these reasons, PeaceAware recommend a 'Community Advisory Board" needs to be implemented at NMSU-KRWG, to insure public participation in KRWG programming decisions and to review the pledge cards.

Finally, we have a Democracy Now film that was shown to the 3,000 attendees to the University of Arizona fund raiser for public access. It is titled "Independent Media in a Time of War." it chronicles the importance of independent, public access media in the United States. I obtained written permission to show this film at now charge at New Mexico State University. Sincerely, David Boje, Co-organizer PeaceAware

Chronicle of efforts to secure "Democracy Now" on KRWG sechedule. We invite your support.

Result of Feb 6th meeting between Boje and manager of KRWG-FM. The station manager did not want to respond to 121 signors and put Democracy Now on the air in Southern New Mexico. The station manager said "no Democracy Now!"  Therefore, be it resolved,

SIGNATORS 1 to 122 on original petition delivered to KRWG on Feb 6th. The General Manager, Colin Gromatzky, said "No" he would not put Democracy Now on the air. We therefore now encourage you to talk to KRWG top Las Cruces supporting organizations.  You can also help by circulating a petition (press here).  If you want your name added to this online list Dboje@Nmsu.edu  and --
