Why KRWG-FM in New Mexico needs a Community Advisory Board?
ANSWER: Monies collected in Pledge Drives to support program
schedule changes being spent on other purposes.
is an awarding winning news and interview program carried on 200 Public Radio
& TV stations. Send
a RESTRICTED GIFT Pledge
KRWG-FM - put Democracy Now on the Air in our community- Thank you.
Current Goals of this Campaign:
ACTION YOU CAN TAKE: Request that a "Community Advisory Board" be formed to diversify KRWG programming and participate in how tax payer dollars are being allocated; email krwgfm@nmsu.edu Also, go on record - send your Letter through PeaceAware - specifying your $$$ contribution to KRWG putting Democracy Now on the air Or you can donate $$$ directly to KRWG's web site. Either way, please Specify that your RESTRICTED GIFT $$$ is CONTINGENT to putting Democracy Now on being put on the air.We believe that raising CONTINGENT $$$ set aside for Democracy Now will persuade New Mexico State University with visible $$$ evidence of community support. We believe the sky will not fall on Las Cruces if KRWG changes its program schedule. Also, please Send Email to Peace@PeaceAware.com if you want to become a member of the Democracy Now listening group - click here for more information and to gain Internaet access to the show.
STATUS REPORT: Thus far PeaceAware has traced hundreds of dollars pledged for Democracy Now (Send $$$ Support Letter Now). However, PeaceAware only recently discovered that in the "Fall Festival 2003" pledge drive, only one pledge card used the words "pledge RESTRICTED GIFT contingent upon adding Democracy Now to KRWG"; all other givers that said things like "put Democracy Now on the air" we are sorry to report that those monies are not legally interpreted by New Mexico State University, as CONTINGENT Funds, and your listener $$$ went into the general fund, without keeping any record of the total amounts pledged to Democracy Now.And the "On-Air Comments" of the "Fall Festival 2003" pledge drive report only six out of 1,000 comments even requesting Democracy Now (abbreviated "DN"):
With such meager support, KRWG is justified in not making any schedule changes. Those of us at PeaceAware who listened to the "On-Air Comments" and worked as volunteers taking pledge calls remember hearing more than six "DN" comments; but memory does not count; we need records. We think KRWG is honorable, and perhaps the pledge volunteers did not write down each comment. Clearly we have to change our strategy. Therefore, at the next pledge drive call-in, please make a written, audio, or video copy of your comments given on-the air - we must all keep accurate records to use in our discussions with KRWG. We at PeaceAware promise to do a better job of tracking comments.
And, next time you make a PLEDGE to KRWG, please indicate "This money is a RESTRICTED GIFT, given contingent only on the condition that Democracy Now is actually added to the KRWG program schedule; any other use of this pledge is PROHIBITED" If you have any questions or comments, please call KRWG at (505) 646-4525 or contact krwgfm@nmsu.edu We ask that you be polite, since our intent is to persuade KRWG that there is significant broad-based listener support.
MONEY TALKS - PeaceAware learned on Nov 24th 2003 a local business switched their pledge money from KRWG to KRUX due to the non-availability of "Democracy Now" on KRWG. And in Silver City, business sponsors of KRWG are withholding all donations until the show is aired on KRWG (unfortunately Silver City is too far away to hear the show on KRUX, the NMSU student station). Clearly, it will take the support of scores of businesses and thousands of listeners before KRWG will be persuaded that a program change is a safe financial risk.
ETHICS - KRWG-fm runs its Pledge Campaign according to its CODE OF ETHICS. Item 4 states, "To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given." When you do not use the words "RESTRICTED GIVE Contingent upon a program change" KRWG is within its ethical code, to use the money where it sees fit. To give RESTRICTED GIFT $$$ CONTINGENT to Democracy Now being the air, please contact- krwgfm@nmsu.edu and also copy Peace@PeaceAware.com so that there are records of the exact purposes for which $$$ is being pledged. Please be courteous and respectful, since irate comments only hurt our on-going dialog and negotiations with KRWG. PeaceAware volunteers are compiling a report to be presented at the next meeting with KRWG representatives.
Please learn your giving rights:
We therefore request that you politely contact KRWG and copy PeaceAware to record your comment, so that these can be compared with the list of comments submitted to the "Festival 2005 ON-AIR COMMENTS" Send to krwgfm@nmsu.edu with a copy to Peace@PeaceAware.com Please be courteous and respectful.

NEXT
STEPS: Here are some possible next steps:
1. KRWG has an open door policy, therefore we need volunteers to go in and give a level-headed presentation views. Please document date, and response to your visit. Please schedule a visit with the following people at KRWG:
2. During the next KRWG-FM pledge period, please record your comments to put Democracy Now on the air - contingent upon your pledge;, and specifically the amounts of any RESTRICTED GIFT contingent funding pledge monies. PLEASE NOTE -When non-contingent pledges, e.g. "put on Democracy Now on the air" and you do not use the words RESTRICTED GIFT CONTINGENT, your money is not separated into a specific account; you must say the words, "this pledge is a RESTRICTED GIFT contingent upon programming change being made" or the money just goes wherever. We need to document this - so send your specific pledge wording to peace@peaceaware.com

Add Democracy Now to Southern New Mexico radio.
On Nov 24th 2003 - several faculty of NMSU supporting a Community Advisory Board met with 5 faculty operating KRWG-fm. Talks are on going. We hope for the best. The establishment of an advisory committee is a proposal worthy of consideration. We will strive to foster atmosphere that conducive to building dialog, trust and collaboration. Our task is to give evidence of listener support for program input, and program changes.
On Sept 6 2003 - Silver City NM Mike Sauber delivered their petition to KRWG. KRWG came up to Silver City to meet with sponsors, contributors and supporters. "Since I never made it to Las Cruces with my petitions I gave them to Michael Olsen who said he would give them to Colin Gromatsky. I'll try and call Colin to go over my concerns as I did with many of the staffers that came up here. I turned in 203 signatures, many of them sponsors of programs." - Mike Sauber
On Sept 1 2003 Democracy Now was put on the Student run radio KRUX 9.15 FM in Las Cruces. This is a great effort by the NMSU students who went through Student Senate to get it done. PeaceAware immediately endorsed and sponsored the show (with cash) and in return gets 15 second announcements about PeaceAware, Grassroots Press, Food Not Bombs, Campus Greens, and Campus Voices for Peace. Please send your donations for PeaceAware sponsorship of KRUX, so this show can continue.
But we also need Democracy Now on KRWG to reach people beyond Las Cruces; KRUX broadcast radius is only a few miles.
On Feb.. 6 2003 David Boje of PeaceAware delivered its petition to put Democracy Now on KRWG radio. The station Manager said "No!." We are therefore asking you to designation $$$ just for "Democracy Now" in your pledge in KRWG's March fund drive campaign. Click Image to see more info on What You Can Do. CLICK HERE to SEND KRWG your "Put Democracy Now on the air" LETTER
BOTTOM LINE: For a petition strategy to work we need thousands of signatures, not hundreds. KRWG is not likely to risk a program change, that could alter community financial support.
Dear Amy Goodman of Democracy Now,
We are in Southern New Mexico and would like to have Democracy Now on KRWG-FM radio. We put together a petition
http:/PeaceAware.com/documents/petition_democracy_now.htm
I (David Boje) met with the station manager, Colin Gromatzky, at 1 PM on Feb. 6 2003. He controls the program schedule. I delivered the petition but was told "No." As I inquired into his reasons. They were
1. To add a program means taking off one. I did suggest a one hour classic music show at 9AM could be a choice. See schedule at http://www.krwgfm.org/week.htm
2. To add in his words, a "one-sided" show like Democracy Now, means he as a "moderate" would be compelled to add a quite conservative program, to have "balance."
3. His preference is to "not rock the boat." Fund raising is successful as it is.
4. He gets calls from people now asking that All things Considered and Fresh Air be removed from the schedule for being "too liberal."
I am copying Mr. Gromatzky this email.
The KRWG-FM manager asked if I could pursue KOBE -AM a station that has day and night conservative talk radio show. I said I would, but that is a tougher sell than KRWG.
However, I think most Southern New Mexico peace movement people would prefer the FM station. Democracy Now is carried in Albuquerque on KUNM, 89.9 FM. I checked their Mon-Fri schedule and they do not seem to have added a conservative show to balance your show.
50 [currently 200] FM stations in the USA seem to have found a way to answer the questions being raised by Mr. Colin Gromatzky.
I was hoping you could help be with some ideas on what we can do next. Also, it would be helpful to have some cost info, so if we need to raise the money we can. I do not think the decision is cost-based, I think it is the perception that NM is a conservative community.
Perhaps you could contact Mr Gromatzky at krwgfm@nmsu.edu or 505-646-4525.
A longer summary of the meeting is at

Thank you,
David Boje

Please
Contact
the
UNDERWRITERS of KRWG-FM Ask
them to Designate their Pledge Money in the KRWG fund raiser to put
Democracy Now on the air in Southern New Mexico. KRWG
radio station presents itself as a public station that is responsive
to the community, but in reality it is public only in that it begs and
receives money. We are part of that community, and over 200 signatory
in Las Cruces and over 130 in Silver City are asking to put Democracy
Now on the air. So far their answer is a firm"No!." We therefore
ask you to Designate some portion of your Donations to KRWG to put Democracy
Now on the Air. Replacing an hour of twenty some hours of classical
music will help the community receive a voice it wants to hear.

BELOW - read for yourself the exchanges between first 121 petitioners and the Station Manager of KRWG. He could put Democracy Now on the air next week. It is not about the budget. It is not about the schedule. There are endless hours of classical music. Who is going to miss one hour. Compare KRWG to the Albuquerque FM station and you find a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.

Additional Notes from the First Meeting Feb. 6 2003 - The KRWG station manager, Mr. Gromatzky's first response, "who do we take off the schedule?" If he says yes to Democracy Now then, some other show must be cut. I said, "we in the peace community would be happy to suggest one." After looking over the schedule, I suggested he cut Performance Today, and put on Democracy Now.
The second objection surfaced. "If Democracy Now were to be added, then" says Mr. Gromatzky, "I would need to add a conservative program." Democracy Now, in his view, is an opinion show, representing the liberals. To keep balance, he would have to add a conservative one. My comment, "I did not consider KRWG a liberal station." Mr. Gromatzky pointed out that Fresh Air and All Things Considered are liberal programs, and he gets many conservatives calling to remove them from the schedule. And liberals call to ask for more programs.
The conversation turned next, to his preference to "not rock the boat." KRWG is a success, able to obtain funds from the community to support its programs. If there is accusation that KRWG is way too liberal, those funds would be threatened. I replied, that the Peace Community of Las Cruces would happily raise funds if that is what was necessary. "How much money would we need?" Programs of this sort, commonly cost $3 to 4 thousand a year. But, that is not the issue. KRWG has a budget, but to put one program on, two would need to be cut, one for the liberals, and one for the conservatives.
He suggested I go after KOBE-AM. I said I would talk to Larry Edwards. It would be good to get Democracy Now on for one hour, but would that balance the day and evening long conservative radio of Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, Mike Reagan, and Savage Nation?
We returned to our discussion of Democracy Now. Mr. Gromatzky said "Democracy Now is one-sided." It is an "opinion program" he reasserted. "I like the commentary. They have important guests. I hear lots of facts and figures, I do not hear from Las Cruces radio." Mr. Gromatzky was not convinced.
I had to stop notes. "I've said all I am going to say" he said. He added, "I do not want to be misquoted." I put down my notes. I hope I have not misquoted. We continued to talk. Mr. Gromatzky and talked about options. If and when NPR goes to digital cable, then two streams of shows will be broadcast. This would allow more room in the schedule for Democracy Now, as well as more conservative voices.
Thanks,
David M. Boje, www.PeaceAware.com in New Mexico
