Dear Interfaith Leaders:
Thank you to all that have agreed to participate:
- Note (there are others participating, but I do not have all their email
addresses). There are others who are about to confirm. i.e. We are meeting
with the Bishop of Dona Ana County in a few days. Our friends the Quakers do
not have leaders, but I have several who have agreed to participate. Others
do not use email and are being updated by mail).
It is time to get organized. Anne Wing is designing new flyers and
Anne McCullough is doing our Press Releases. We need to get the word out. Our
vision is for about 30 Interfaith leaders to participate in the New Mexico
Interfaith Symposium and invite 100 people from New Mexico to attend our evening
session. If you have a topic to speak on, please let me know at dboje@nmsu.edu
or 505-532-1693. Or call Moira Kanim at 527-5380.
I want us to begin to plan the agenda for the day with you and with others who
have currently RSVP-ed. I want your input. Thanks - David Boje,
facilitator.
THINGS TO DO:
First, please help by Posting and Distributing this Flyer. I will invite Ann
Wing to make a new one that includes all your names.

Please Distribute the Larger Size http://www.zianet.com/boje/peace/images/Interfaith_Flyer.jpg
If you know people at http://www.zianet.com/Bulletin/newcomer/churches.html
then please invite them.
- Time and Place
15 March - New Mexico
Interfaith Search for Peace Retreat. There are People of Faith, for and against Iraq war.
PeaceAware and Voices for Peace is inviting leaders of New Mexico religious
bodies to express their views and to dialog. Place Guthrie Hall, Room 100 at
NMSU (park at University & Solano lot); New Time 2 to 6
meeting of clergy and Lay Leaders to discuss their views on war and peace.
From 6-8 PM there is an Evening Program for all residents of Southern New
Mexico - to hear 5 volunteers report out from Clergy and Lay Leaders of New
Mexico dialogues, then Open Microphone discussion, and we end with prayer
and a Candle Light Vigil. Maps are available at http://www.nmsu.edu/General/Maps/1a.html
(Gutherie is Building 19 on the map).
Purpose - We promote Interfaith dialog
among People of Faith. We see an obstacle that can be overcome. How do you
talk to a congregation divided about war and peace? We meet to talk together
to continue conversation among clergy and faith leaders. Our purpose is to
seek peaceful alternatives, to spend time in spiritual discernment, and find
ways to be responsive to the fear and anger in our community. Beyond the
horizon of this tragic war time, there is the possibility that after a decade
or more, the world faith community will decide to pursue world peace.
Second, review the document http://www.zianet.com/boje/peace/documents/religions_for_peace.htm
Third, order your Visitors Parking Pass on line http://www.nmsupolice.com/permit/parking.asp
Finally, please give me any ideas on topics and process for our Interfaith
Symposium.
Here is a tentative plan for the day.
PROGRAM: (Based upon feedback we
modified the program to go 2PM to 6PM and we invite Five volunteers to carry the
message to the 6-8PM evening program).
- Open with Prayer
- 2-3PM - Each faith leader speak for 3 to 5 minutes to introduce yourself,
say where you stand personally, where you think your place of worship
stands, and what is the biggest issue you face in talking to people about
peace.
- 3-4PM - Interfaith round table discussions in groups of two to four
people.
- Possible Table Topics:
- 1. Just War Doctrine
- 2. How to Educate congregations about alternatives to war (win
without war)?
- 3. Dealing with Fear that lies beneath the surface
- 4. What are steps to achieve World Peace
- 5. Intercessory prayer
- 6. Other topics you want to propose...
- 4-6PM - Plenary Session and Pot Luck - Spokespersons will Dialog
with large group and share summary points of each Round Table Discussion and
invite Dialog of Next Steps of a New Mexico Interfaith Community. Sample
ideas:
- Form an Interfaith Study Group
- Write a position paper
- Develop educational materials
- Conduct a follow up event
- Plan the Evening Program. Who volunteers to speak; What themes?
- 6-8PM - Evening Program - We would like five Faith Leader volunteers to speak
to the Southern New Mexico Community.
- Five short presentation of themes of the day
- Open Microphone to invite Dialog with the audience
- Close with Candle Light Ceremony - Light a Candle for Peace
Please let me know if you have other ideas for the agenda and program. Please
invite people to our afternoon program and evening event.
Thank you, and pray for peace.
